Preparing to start chemotherapy…..why do I need an echocardiogram first?

Frequently prior to starting chemo patients have an echo to assess their LV function. This is done prior to starting the chemo and at the conclusion of treatment. Some types of chemo have a toxic effect on the heart and can cause a weakening of the heart muscle, and the echo is done to evaluate your heart to make sure it is normal.
